28 Sept 09: Ipswich to Gibraltar
28th September 2009
A teenager from Capel St Mary has cycled the mammoth 1,916 mile journey from his home to Gibraltar to raise funds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
Ross Garwood, 18, of Friars, Capel St Mary, managed to complete the inspirational journey with his Dad, Alan, within a month- leaving home at 5.30pm on August 16th and reaching their destination in Gibraltar at 5pm on September 16th.
Ross, who is due to start a chemistry degree at York University in the next fortnight, was inspired by his dad, who works with Children’s Centres across the county to support a children’s charity, which is why he chose to support EACH.
Ross said: "It was an amazing trip. We met some really interesting people, stayed in all sorts of camp sites and hostels along the way and had some amazing experiences including following a French cyclist through the Pyrenees after our planned route was blocked off."
"I’d never been a keen cyclist before this challenge but now I’m hooked and I’ll be doing a lot more cycling."
EACH provides care and support for life-threatened children and their families in their own homes, as well as at the charity’s hospices based at Ipswich in Suffolk, which also serves North Essex, Quidenham in Norfolk and Milton in Cambridgeshire.
Ross has already raised more than £500 for EACH for his efforts and hope that figure will grow as more people learn about his achievement. To sponsor Ross visit: www.justgiving.com/ipswichtogibraltar
