5.Jan.11: Wishes come true for children's hospice

5th January 2011

A wishing well in the garden of an elderly Long Stratton man has raised more than £1,000 for a local children’s hospice.

Alf Allen, 84, of Long Stratton, has raised in excess of £1,000 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) which runs a hospice in nearby Quidenham.

He put out a small wishing well in his garden for decoration about two years ago, and was amazed to find coins had been dropped into it by local residents.

Alf then decided to use the generosity of his neighbours to raise funds for a local charity and decided EACH was the worthiest cause.

He has set up a sign by the well to explain who he is raising funds for, and brings the well inside every night to keep it safe.

Alf said: “I couldn’t believe it when I went outside and found coins in the bottom of the well. I have always supported charities so I thought the best thing to do was give the money to the local children’s hospice. “

Claire LeLievre, EACH Community Fundraising Co-ordinator for South Norfolk, said: “We are really pleased that Alf thought of supporting EACH after discovering mystery donations in his garden wishing well. We would like to thank him and all those who have donated to the cause over the past two years.
“I hope people’s wishes have come true. Donations from Alf and his supporters ensure EACH can continue to deliver care and support to life-threatened children and their families wherever they wish; either in the hospice or at their family home.”
