Dedicated Cambridgeshire Carol singers are hoping a 12-hour singathon will raise much needed funds for charity.
The St Mary and St Michael Church in Trumpington will host the Big Carol Sing on Friday (3) which will see various choirs singing constantly over a period of 12 hours to raise funds for local charity East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). It is estimated that more than 240 carols will be sung throughout the day.
EACH supports families and cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. The event is also in aid of The Children’s Society, which supports vulnerable children affected by poverty, neglect or discrimination.
The Big Carol Sing, which is the brainchild of Revd Andy Chrich, will start at 10am on Friday with a performance from Fawcett Primary School. There will be various performances during the day including Cambridge Choral Scholars, Trumpington choirs and bell ringers and Bidwells' Choir.
Revd Chrich said: “Every year I get the chance to sing a lot of carols- it goes with the territory! However, this year I thought I'd really go for it, so I have organised 'The Big Carol Sing'.
“Loads of people from the community are involved and we are really hoping to make a decent sum of money for two fantastic charities. EACH do a fantastic job supporting children and families in the most difficult of circumstances, but they are very dependent on fundraising to keep these services going. I'd really like to help them make a big difference.
“I'll be in for the long haul on Friday and consuming vast quantities of throat sweets on Saturday to try and have enough of a voice to get through Sunday's services.”
Performances will take place in various locations in the village including The St Mary and St Michael Church and Denis Wilson Court as well as around Trumpington itself and the local community are being urged to come along and take part in the singing.
There will be an evening carol concert at the church between 7:30pm and 9:30pm and the day will conclude with a Carol singing session through the village.
