16.Mar.11: Students 'have a ball' for a worthy cause

16th March 2011

Cambridge University students have turned May Ball frivolities into vital funds for their local children’s hospice.

The Darwin College May Ball, which took place on June 18 last year, raised £1,000 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) and the college will continue the tradition by raising funds at this year’s ball too.

Meenal Pore, President of last year’s ball committee said: “The ball was fairytale themed, and fairytales are especially for children, so we wanted to give the funds raised from the event to a local children’s charity.

“The ball went really well, everyone had a great time, and it’s wonderful to know we were able to support EACH in the process.

“The ball took a lot of organisation and hard work so I wish this year’s committee good luck! But seriously, it was an incredibly rewarding experience and I know they’ll enjoy it and get a great sense of satisfaction too.”

Beccy Turner, EACH fundraiser, said: “We are delighted the Darwin College May Ball committee have chosen EACH to benefit from last years’ ball and their decision to support us this year too.

“We rely on voluntary donations for the majority of our income, which is why the support of the local community is vitally important to us at EACH.”
The college’s fundraising support is set to continue. Funds from this year’s Darwin College May Ball, which has a circus theme and is being organised by committee President, Akin Ali and Vice President, Kylie Beasley, will be donated to EACH.
