A Cringleford businessman will be fulfilling a longstanding personal ambition to walk the 177-mile Offa’s Dyke in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
Nigel Hopwood, 49, of Cringleford, will travel to Prestatyn on Saturday (16) and begin the challenging 177 mile the walk on Sunday (17). He will walk the route solo; stopping at various B&B’s along the way and hopes to complete it in 13 days.
The walk follows the Offa’s Dyke National Trail between Prestatyn in North Wales and Chepstow in the south on the Severn Estuary. The route follows the great earthwork between England and Wales, commissioned by King Offa of Mercia.
Nigel, who is a partner at Hymans Robertson LLP in London, which specialises in advisory and management services to the occupational pensions market, has been sponsored by his family, friends and colleagues. Initially setting himself a target of £500- Nigel has so far raised £1,185.
Nigel said: “I’m not totally sure where my yearning came from, other than the walk has been featured in TV dramas, films, and books I’ve seen and read over the years, and I suppose at some point I must have thought “I’d like to do that...”
“I’ll be walking up to 18 miles a day through some widely varying terrain and scenery, and probably the complete range of weather too.
“Given that this is a personal challenge, it seems a highly appropriate opportunity to raise some money for a local good cause. I am very fortunate as a father not to have needed the services of EACH - so I wanted to raise funds for those who really need their care and support.”
Jess Hiscocks. EACH fundraiser, said: “Nigel has decided to take on this challenge for EACH and we would like to thank him for his efforts. It has taken a lot of planning and will be physically demanding so we wish him well on his travels and look forward to following his progress via his blog.”
