09.Mar.11: Survival night for EACH

9th March 2011

A Cambridge charity, which works with young people facing significant challenges in their lives, is hoping their efforts will also support life-threatened children in their community.
Youngsters and staff from the Romsey Mill charity in Hemingford Road, will be undertake a survival night challenge; camping over night at Milton Country Park tomorrow night (10) to learn vital interpersonal skills and raise money for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
Romsey Mill is a Christian charity committed to overcoming disadvantage, challenging injustice and promoting social inclusion with young people, children and families. They support around 2,500 people each year.
Kieran Walker, Cairan Casserkey, Stuart Moseley, Sam Green and Layek Hussain, will undertake their challenge as part of a course being run by Romsey Mill to develop their confidence and interpersonal skills.
The youngsters will camp out with Romsey Mill staff, Tom Scotter and Mike Farrington, and with only an open fire and sleeping bag to keep them warm, they will need to work as a team to make it through the night.
Mike said: “The young people decided to support EACH with their challenge as they realised it was a worthy cause.
“The challenge will be a great way for them to learn new skills. They have already planned the night, and chosen a charity to support, they now need to undertake the challenge and learn how to cook on an open fire, keep warm, remain positive and work as team to reassure and support one another.”
The group plan to arrive at the park at 6:30am and leave the following day at 8am. Romsey Mill will provide a kit which includes a sleeping bag, air mat, hot food and drink and tents. The youngsters will need to bring their own thermal undergarments, warm clothes, pillow and flask.
Beccy Turner, EACH fundraiser, said: “I think it’s great what the youngsters from Romsey Mill are doing and here at EACH we would like to thank them for their support.
“I hope they enjoy their challenge, which they are doing for an incredibly worthwhile cause, and learn many important skills in the process.”
